Souq Mubarakiya
One of the rare ones that are still old fashioned.
It's not the very original market, that one got destroyed during the invasion, but they rebuilt it in the old style.
You find everything here.
It has a nice gold market, one of the famous carpet markets and one of the four fish markets.
Don't forget to bargain and do some small talk.
The shop owners love it.
It takes a bit to get used to, but it's worth it.
Have a tea break or some food between your shopping
Yesterday I finally managed to deliver the prints to the guys of Souq Mubarakiya.
They were all happy. Made me happy.
And I learned a lot about relationships there, who is related to who (brothers, fathers, etc.), a big happy family.
The pictures are not great, but alright when printed in Original file size.
I have uploaded only a few and in small size, imho a tad pixeled.
All shots are taken with my Casio EX-P505, not a fan of lowlight and all shots are handheld, some with food in my hands that shopkeepers gave me :P
I'm sure one could improve a lot in tones and whatnot, but hey, I did it for them for free, alright, so don't be too critical with me ;)
Here's the story behind it from a few weeks back:
November 12, 2007
Last week I have been at Souq Mubarakiya. After I took one picture of a shop keeper, they couldn’t be stopped. Many wanted pictures. So I took them.
Free training for me.
Fresh Dates - Frische Datteln
- he gave me some Dates to taste, not the fresh ones, I got those later.
There were some from Iraq and some from Kuwait. The ones from Kuwait were Best and I ended up buying some)
Free nuts for a shot - Freie Nuesse fuer ein Foto
Me too!
When you take pictures at a souq, all kinds of people all off a sudden want to get on the picture as well, rarely one says “No”.
I even got some Kuwaitis that way (will post them another day)
After the Veggie guys I got “dragged” over to the Kebap shop to please take some pictures there.
They gave me a fresh piece of bread. It was a bit hard to take pictures with it, dangling out of my mouth, people looked at me a bit funny, but it was SO good :)!
From these guys I went on the the meat market, very, uhm, interesting experience.
After delivering the pictures to the people of Souq Mubarakiya on Friday I actually didn't want to take any pictures.
But the I thought better of it.
I have no pictures yet of the murals on the walls.
After the original Souq got destroyed in the war and they rebuilt it later, trying to build as close to how the original had been,
they also placed murals on the alls, depicting scenes of the old Souq and also showing scenes of the various spots at the market.
It was also my first time there on a Friday. Luckily I was pretty early, so it wasn't packed, but I was amazed by the amount of shops open, it seemed like a whole different market than usual.
(I've asked in both cases if a picture is ok with them, well, more or less ;) )
Not Kuwait ;)
